87 وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا مُوسَى ٱلْكِتَٰبَ وَقَفَّيْنَا مِنۢ بَعْدِهِۦ بِٱلرُّسُلِ ۖ وَءَاتَيْنَا عِيسَى ٱبْنَ مَرْيَمَ ٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِ وَأَيَّدْنَٰهُ بِرُوحِ ٱلْقُدُسِ ۗ أَفَكُلَّمَا جَآءَكُمْ رَسُولٌۢ بِمَا لَا تَهْوَىٰٓ أَنفُسُكُمُ ٱسْتَكْبَرْتُمْ فَفَرِيقًۭا كَذَّبْتُمْ وَفَرِيقًۭا تَقْتُلُونَ

88 وَقَالُوا۟ قُلُوبُنَا غُلْفٌۢ ۚ بَل لَّعَنَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِكُفْرِهِمْ فَقَلِيلًۭا مَّا يُؤْمِنُونَ

89 وَلَمَّا جَآءَهُمْ كِتَٰبٌۭ مِّنْ عِندِ ٱللَّهِ مُصَدِّقٌۭ لِّمَا مَعَهُمْ وَكَانُوا۟ مِن قَبْلُ يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُم مَّا عَرَفُوا۟ كَفَرُوا۟ بِهِۦ ۚ فَلَعْنَةُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَى ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ

90 بِئْسَمَا ٱشْتَرَوْا۟ بِهِۦٓ أَنفُسَهُمْ أَن يَكْفُرُوا۟ بِمَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بَغْيًا أَن يُنَزِّلَ ٱللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِۦ عَلَىٰ مَن يَشَآءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِۦ ۖ فَبَآءُو بِغَضَبٍ عَلَىٰ غَضَبٍۢ ۚ وَلِلْكَٰفِرِينَ عَذَابٌۭ مُّهِينٌۭ

91 وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ ءَامِنُوا۟ بِمَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ قَالُوا۟ نُؤْمِنُ بِمَآ أُنزِلَ عَلَيْنَا وَيَكْفُرُونَ بِمَا وَرَآءَهُۥ وَهُوَ ٱلْحَقُّ مُصَدِّقًۭا لِّمَا مَعَهُمْ ۗ قُلْ فَلِمَ تَقْتُلُونَ أَنۢبِيَآءَ ٱللَّهِ مِن قَبْلُ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

يذكر المفسرون — ومنهم الطبري وابن كثير — أن هذه الآيات تتابع قصة بني إسرائيل مع الرسل: آتى الله موسى الكتاب، ثم أرسل الرسل من بعده، وآتى عيسى ابن مريم البينات وأيده بروح القدس، فكان كلما جاءهم رسول بما لا تهوى أنفسهم استكبروا ففريقاً كذّبوا وفريقاً يقتلون. ثم قالوا «قلوبنا غلف» فأخبر الله أن اللعن بكفرهم قليلٌ ما يؤمنون. ولما جاءهم كتاب من عند الله مصدّق لما معهم وكانوا من قبل يستفتحون على الذين كفروا، فلما جاءهم ما عرفوا كفروا به — فلعنة الله على الكافرين. ثم تذمّ الآية ما اشتروا به أنفسهم أن يكفروا بما أنزل الله بغياً أن ينزّل الله من فضله على من يشاء من عباده، فباءوا بغضب على غضب. وإذا قيل لهم آمنوا بما أنزل الله قالوا نؤمن بما أُنزل علينا ويكفرون بما وراءه وهو الحق مصدّقاً لما معهم. فالمعنى عند أهل التفسير: الاستكبار عن الرسول الحق، ودعوى القلوب المغلقة، والكفر بما عرفوه بعد الاستفتاح به، وتجزئة الإيمان — كلها خذلان.

English: Classical tafsir (Tabari, Ibn Kathir): God gave Moses the Book, then messengers after him, and Jesus clear proofs with the Holy Spirit — yet whenever a messenger brought what their souls disliked they grew arrogant: some they denied, some they killed. Saying 'our hearts are covered' is answered as a curse for their disbelief. When a confirming Book came from God — which they had awaited against the disbelievers — they rejected what they recognized. They sold themselves by disbelieving
